Why we choose to donate socks for every pair that we sell
Published by STRIDIES
When the idea of STRIDIES came about, we were certain that we could change the way that socks were made, and for the better. We spent 5 years crafting the most comfortable socks on the planet, because for an item you wear for an average of 16 hours per day, surely your feet deserve the best. So we re-engineered the humble sock, but not just around its features (four major to be precise) and material (quality, of course)...
We wanted to make socks that care as much about the world and people around them as you do. That’s why we added some thought and care to perfect each pair. For every pair of socks that you buy, one pair is donated to someone who is homeless. This is our BUY1 = GIVE 1 pledge, and so far we have donated over 5000 pairs this year.
Socks are one of the most requested items by homeless shelters
Perhaps you’re wondering why we choose to donate socks, other than the fact that socks are what we do! Well, socks are one of the most requested items by homeless shelters, due to rarely being donated, unlike items such as coats or jumpers, which are often donated whilst still in good condition. Socks are a wear through item, meaning we usually wear them until they have holes in and are no longer of any use, so it’s not surprising that very few are donated. Would you donate your hold hole ridden socks?
We’re really excited about the giving back aspect of our brand. We believe that everyone deserves to feel comfortable in a pair of socks and we know that they’re an item that we often take for granted.
At STRIDIES, we went a step further and engineered a special donation sock to specifically meet the needs of the recipient. This is someone who walks more than the average person, in fact it can be up to 10 miles per day our research found. They don’t have the luxury of a washing machine whenever they need one and so these socks need to be much more durable than the average pair.
We wanted to make socks that care as much about the world and people around them as you do.
Engineering socks that are fit for purpose...
That’s why as much engineering goes into the features of our donation socks, as the socks that you buy. They’re antibacterial, meaning they don’t need to be washed as often, durable yet versatile and designed using hard wearing colours. Seamless toe closure avoids irritation on the toes and arch support provides added support and comfort for the feet.
Large numbers of homeless people have foot pain and other problems severe enough to affect their ability to walk and as we know, walking is a primary means of transportation in this community. Foot problems as severe as frostbite and trench foot, which can lead to amputation can be avoided, all from something as simple as a pair of socks.
That’s why donating quality socks that are brand new and fit for purpose is so important to us - it’s why we pledge to donate a pair to someone in need for every pair of socks that we sell.
